Free online games for couples that run in a browser and start with exactly two players. We tested each one with two players: Codenames Duet, Battleship, skribbl.io, WorldGuessr and more.
By Mario Jankovic 8 min read The best free online games for couples start with exactly two players, run in a browser tab and only need a link. Codenames Duet is the pick for working together, Battleship on Papergames for a quick duel, skribbl.io for drawing, WorldGuessr for guessing places, a shared crossword on Cross with Friends for a slow evening, and PlayingCards.io for any card game you already know. None of them needs an account.
Many “games for couples” lists mix in games for one keyboard, games that need four people and games that shut down. So in October 2026 we set up each game below as two players in two separate browsers, one laptop-sized and one phone-sized, and wrote down what actually happened.
Full disclosure: I make Glint, a cozy browser app for hanging out in rooms you decorate together. Glint has no built-in games, so nothing on this list is ours. More on how they fit together at the end.
| Game | What you do | Starts with two? | Account | Phone | A round takes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Codenames Duet | Give each other word clues, as a team | Yes | No, a nickname | Yes | About 15 minutes |
| Battleship on Papergames | Sink each other’s ships | Yes | No, a nickname | Yes | Up to 6 minutes |
| skribbl.io | Draw and guess | Yes, set Players to 2 | No | Yes | 3 to 9 minutes |
| WorldGuessr | Guess where in the world you are | Yes | No | Yes | 3 to 4 minutes |
| Cross with Friends | Solve a crossword together | Yes | No | Yes, a bit fiddly | 1 minute for a mini, longer for big grids |
| PlayingCards.io | Play any card game on a shared table | Yes | No | Better sideways | Depends on the game |
| Gartic Phone | Telephone with drawings | Yes, with a warning | No | Not tested | Depends on the mode |
Co-op games put you on the same side, which is a nice change if one of you hates losing.
Codenames Online has a two-player mode that many lists miss. The regular game needs teams, and the lobby says so plainly: “Classic 4+ players.” Pick Duet instead (“2+ players”). You each see a different key card, and you take turns giving one-word clues to steer the other person toward your green agents without hitting an assassin. You only type a nickname, then send your partner the room link.

It’s the most talky game here, which makes it great over a call. The site says a game takes about 15 minutes.
Cross with Friends is a crossword you fill in together: both of your cursors show up in the grid in different colors, and every letter appears on the other screen right away. Pick a puzzle from the archive, and the site gives you a link to send. Nobody needs an account, and there were no ads when we played. A mini took us one minute, and the standard-size puzzles we looked at usually take people 8 to 15 minutes, by the site’s own solve times.
It’s the calmest game on this list. On a phone, the grid fits nicely, but the clue list and chat sit off to the side, so expect some scrolling. It appears to be the same project as Down for a Cross, whose old address, downforacross.com, no longer works.
Papergames.io has Battleship, Connect 4, tic-tac-toe and more, all free and with no account. Choose “Play with a friend”, type a nickname and send the link it gives you; your partner opens it and the game starts. Ships are placed for you, so there’s no setup. Each of you has a three minute clock that only runs on your turn, so a game takes about six minutes of turn time at most with the default clock.

Two things to know: the site is heavy on ads, and it shows a small flag for each player’s country. On the phone you only get emoji reactions, not the text chat.
WorldGuessr drops you somewhere in the world at street level, and you guess where on the map you are. It’s free and paid for by ads. Make a party, send the code or link, and the host starts once the other person is in; alone, it tells you that you need one more player. The default party is five rounds with 30 seconds each, so a game takes three to four minutes. It worked on a phone-sized screen too.

skribbl.io is Pictionary in the browser. Choose “Create Private Room”, set Players to 2, copy the invite link and send it. It started right away with two of us. Each drawing turn is 80 seconds by default, and a game of three rounds takes a few minutes. You can add your own words, which is where it gets fun for couples: inside jokes, places you’ve been, people you both know.

Gartic Phone is telephone with drawings: one of you writes a sentence, the other draws it, and so on. When we pressed Start with fewer than four people, it warned that “the playability is better when there are at least 4 players” and asked if we wanted to continue. Say yes and it starts. With two people the chain is short, so play a few rounds in a row, or save it for when friends join.
PlayingCards.io is a virtual card table rather than a game. Pick a deck, like Crazy Eights, and it gives you a room code to send. Your partner types the code and you’re both at the table, dragging cards around. It doesn’t enforce any rules, so it works for most card games you already know, from Go Fish to your family’s own version of rummy. It’s free with no account and we saw no ads. On a phone it’s cramped upright and fine sideways. Rooms are deleted after two weeks without anyone playing, its FAQ says.
Some games we couldn’t test because their sites blocked our test browser, so we’re only mentioning them: JKLM.fun’s BombParty (a fast word game that starts with two), Poker Now (play-money poker with video built in) and Colonist (a Catan-style board game).
Psychologist Arthur Aron has studied this for decades, and his advice is simple. “In a long-term relationship, what matters is doing things that are novel and interesting with your partner,” he told Hidden Brain in 2025. “It’s not just doing them and having your partner nearby, it’s doing them together.” A new game is about the cheapest new thing two people can do on a Tuesday.
Researchers at the University of Washington followed 13 long-distance couples who play together every week. Their 2025 paper notes that playing multiplayer games is “a common way for couples in LDRs to spend time together,” with co-op games giving them shared wins and competitive games some friendly teasing.
Laura Silverstein, a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist, puts it more plainly on the Gottman Institute blog: “A common mistake couples make is to wait for weekends or even vacations to have fun.” A six-minute game of Battleship fits into a weeknight.
None of the games in our table has voice built in, so you’ll want a call running next to them. Any call works. If you want somewhere that feels like a place, a Glint room is where we’d do it: you hang out in a room you’ve decorated together, talk over voice or video, and open the game in another tab. The scoreboard can live on a sticky note on the wall.

You can try a room without signing up, or read how Glint works for long-distance couples. For video games, games you can play on a call with no app at all and games for different time zones, see our long distance games for couples. And for a slower night, here’s how to watch YouTube together online.
What online games can couples play for free? Codenames Duet, Battleship and Connect 4 on Papergames, skribbl.io, WorldGuessr, Cross with Friends, PlayingCards.io and Gartic Phone are all free, run in a browser and start with two people.
Do we need to download anything or make an account? No. Every game in our table runs in a browser, and none of them made us sign up in our tests. Some ask for a nickname.
Can we play these on our phones? Yes. Every game we tried on a phone-sized screen worked. Codenames, Battleship, skribbl.io and WorldGuessr were the most comfortable. PlayingCards.io is better with the phone turned sideways.
What’s a good game for a couple where one person doesn’t play games? Codenames Duet or a shared crossword. You’re on the same team, nothing needs fast fingers, and the fun is in talking it through.
What’s the quickest game for a weeknight? WorldGuessr (three to four minutes) or Battleship on Papergames (about six minutes).
